Hello Listeners,

Hope you enjoyed the sunshine today to the fullest. I decided it would be fitting to feature a few of the hits and rarities from Motown, since the label’s pop-sensibilities and precise orchestration seemed to suit the weather.

You can find much of what I played today on various Motown compilations, the most extensive of which is probably “The Complete Motown Singles,” an ongoing series of compilations released by Hip-O Select. Each volume covers one year in the label’s history; they’ve released Volumes 1 through 9 so far, covering all the Motown singles from 1959 to 1969. Another good compilation is “Hitsville USA: The Motown Singles Collection, 1959-1971,” a four-CD set of pretty much all of Motown’s big hits. For some of Motown’s more obscure releases, a good place to begin is a two-volume set entitled “Tamla-Motown Connoisseurs”—it’s a favorite amongst Northern Soul fans in the U.K.

If you have any questions about finding a particular track, just send me an email and I’ll look it up for you!

Best,
