Dear Listeners,

Today I featured Hi Records, a Memphis-based label. In the mid-50s, it started out releasing rockabilly records, then moved to grittier R&B, until 1970, when Willie Mitchell took over as president and ushered them into about a decade’s worth of smoothly orchestrated soul. Mitchell acted as both producer and president, directing the label artistically and financially. Al Green was the label’s biggest success, though Ann Peebles, Otis Clay, O.V. Wright, and Syl Johnson also had hits. By the late-70s, however, the label had begun to stagnate and Mitchell sold it to L.A.-based Liberty Records. Though he spent a few years in L.A. continuing to produce for Hi, by 1979, Mitchell had left.

As usual, concert announcements are first, followed by the playlist.
